The foundation stone of Rajiv Gems Park at the Hardware Park in Shamshabad was laid by chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday.
 
This SEZ in Andhra Pradesh marks the nation's third SEZ catering to the gem and jewellery industry after Santacruz in Mumbai and Salt Lake in Kolkata.
 
The Gitanjali Group has been chosen by the state government to develop the SEZ that would be involved in the designing, cutting and polishing of jewellery.
 
The zone, once fully operational, would generate 50,000 new jobs and this number is expected to rise to two to three lakh in due course, informed a press release.
