French President Nicolas Sarkozy today said he was counting on Pakistan to intensify its fight against terrorist groups based in the country. He also asserted that it was unacceptable for the world that insurgent groups trained in Pakistan masterminds and carries out terrorist acts across nations.

Sarkozy, accompanied by his wife Carla Bruni, had paid homage to the victims of the 26/11 terror attack at the Trident hotel in south Mumbai.

“We should have true international cooperation to combat terrorism. We shall stand by India so that justice is delivered. Mumbai terror attacks are comparable to 9/11 attacks. I count on Pakistan authorities to show that they are resolute in combating terrorism,” the French President said.

Sarkozy also honoured Karambir Kang of Taj Hotel and Devendra Bharma of Trident-Oberoi for their efforts in saving lives during the 26/11 attacks with the “Insignia of Officer of Ordre National Du Merite” for distinguished service.Sarkozy, on the last leg of his four-day India visit, went to the Police Memorial on Marine Drive, dedicated to security men killed in fighting terrorists during the 2008 attacks.

Sarkozy’s statement comes after his comment on Monday in New Delhi that Pakistan should fight terrorism determinedly. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that the two leaders talked about common concerns including Pakistan, Afghanistan and terrorism.
