The government today said it has established a committee to improve the quality of service of one of the world's oldest mineral mapping organisations, the Geological Survey of India (GSI).

"The Quality Management Committee was set up in the Geological Survey of India on the initiative of the Special Secretary (Mines) S Vijaykumar with a view to reassess the capabilities, identify gap areas and suggest measures to improve the quality of services and products of GSI," an official statement said here.

The ministry said that it will stress on the need for proper maintenance of mining equipment and their timely replacement.

"It would be given due consideration for maintaining the input-output quality and their optimal use," it added.

In a recent meeting with the GSI brass, the ministry evaluated "the activities of the missions, problems encountered in their functioning, gap areas noticed in the improvement of services and products and suggested measures to overcome them".

"It was recognised that quality can not be mandated, it has to be inculcated and come from within the personnel of the organisation," it said.
