Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-GN) has joined hands with US-based Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to undertake joint multi-disciplinary research projects in fire safety engineering.
"We have collaborated with Underwriters Laboratory to start research projects in fire safety engineering at IIT-GN and create national fire incident database for documenting them," Director IIT-GN Sudhir K Jain told reporters.
IIT-GN students shall be developing a web based database to document fire incidents throughout India, he added.
As part of this project, they shall meet staff of US Fire Administration managing the US National Fire Incident Database System (NFIRS), and try develop a model on similar lines for the fire department in India, Jain said.
A web based data bank of fire incidents shall be useful in developing the right kind of engineering practices for fire prevention, detection and suppression in the country.
