India adds 90 lakh mobile users in April

The country saw an addition of about 90 lakh GSM mobile users during April 2009, taking the GSM subscriber base to 29.7 crore.

Bharti Airtel remained the market leader with a 34.49 per cent market share, followed by Vodafone Essar with 24.03 per cent market share.

Bharti Airtel has added 28.1 lakh subscribers, taking its subscriber base to 9.6 crore.

Vodafone's subscriber base increased by 4.03 per cent to 7.1 crore with the addition of 27.7 lakh in April.

Coming at number three, state-run BSNL has a market share of 16.03 per cent with a subscriber base of 4.7 crore adding just over 10 lakh new users. In March, the company had added 25 lakh new subscribers.  Another telecom PSU MTNL has 1.42 per cent market share with a subscriber base of 42 lakh.

MTNL added 45,553 subscribers in April.

Idea Cellular, with a market share of 14.83 per cent, has added 11 lakh subscribers, taking its base to 4.4 crore.

Across the country, there are now 29.7 crore GSM connections, which is up by 3.09 per cent from 28.8 crore in March 2009.

In April, the total number of new additions was less compared to the previous month. In March, the country saw subscriber addition of one crore, the highest since the launch of various GSM networks in the country.
