Inflation down to 40-month low of 5.96% in March
Inflation stood at 6.84% in the year ago period
Shanu Athiparambath New Delhi After the moderate rise in February, the Wholesale price index (WPI) inflation fell to 5.96% in March 2013. This is the lowest recorded figure in 40 months.
After declining for four months straight, the WPI inflation had gone up from 6.62% in January 2013 to 6.84% in February 2013, according to the data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry..
The CPI inflation had eased moderately to 10.39% in March, according to the data released on 12th April.
On the monetary policy review of March 19, the RBI had cut the repo rate by 25 basis points.
In February 2012, the inflation was 7.69%. The cumulative inflation in the financial year 2012-13 is 5.96% compared to the cumulative rate 7.69% in the financial year 2011-12.
The Inflation in manufactured products (Weight-age: 64.97%) was at 4.07% and that of fuel and power (Weight -age: 14.91%) was at 10.18%.
The inflation in 'Food Articles' which has a weight-age of 14.3% in the WPI basket stood at 8.73%, and the index for 'Non-Food Articles' group was at 8.95%. The index for 'Minerals' group registered a reading of -0.39%.
The inflation in onions was as high as 94.85%. The price rise in rice was at 17.90% and that of wheat was at 19.87%. The price of vegetables fell by 0.95% and that of potatoes rose by 20.06%. While the inflation in egg, meat and fish stood at 11.06%, the price of milk was at 4.42%, and that of fruits went up to 4.71%.
