With space becoming the biggest constraint in the housing sector, interior decoration is becoming a fad among urban consumers.

Thus, those opting for flats with as small as 600 square feet dwelling area, are opting for interior decorates, to optimise the space-utility, feels Bichitresh Saha, president, The Association of Architects, Builders, Interior Decorators and Allied Business (ABID).

"About ten years ago, there was no concept of using interior designers, but now the concept is changing," he said.

While the use of Vaastu Shastra, or the traditional Indian architecture, is no longer an emerging trend in the housing sector, its popularity at its peak, believes Sundeep Chadha, an architect by profession.

"Given a choice, all those buying new houses, are opting for Vaastu. Thus those architects, who never learned Vaastu before, are learning it, once in profession," Chadha said.

Other noticeable trends in the sector include, high-rise apartment with glass and metal facade, according to Saha.

"High traffic inflow needs very durable material to withstand use. As a result, people opt for glass and metal finish," Saha said.

However, the glass or metal facade is still limited to commercial spaces due to privacy concerns, feels Chadha.

ABID is organising a five-day fair on Netaji Indoor Stadium on home decors. About 2 lakh visitors are expected to visit the fair.
