Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy yesterday said the Lok Sabha should be dissolved and fresh elections held in June after the school and college examinations, as it was the only solution to the present impasse.

At a press conference here, he said it was sad that the nation was forced into a poll, but it was the only way out.

Swamy alleged that the situation had been brought about by the false promise of a United Front leader who misled Congress president, Sitaram Kesri, and a Congress leader who misled Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. He said the UF leader had assured Kesri of his support to a Congress-led government, while the Congress leader had assured the Prime Minister that 80 to 90 Congress MPs would vote in favour of his confidence motion.

Expressing surprise that two experienced politicians like the Prime Minister and the Congress president could be misled by such flimsy promises, Swamy said they had landed the nation into instability because of their credulity. While hoping that elections would be held in June, he said it would give an opportunity for parties in Tamil Nadu to come together to form a comprehensive, United opposition to DMK and Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC).SwamysaidCongressmen were not unhappy with Kesri's decision to withdraw support to the United Front regime, but were against the manner in which the move was made, without their being taken into confidence.

He demanded that presidential assent be granted to a land reforms legislation enacted in 1979 by the then AIADMK government to take over excessive benami land holdings. His party workers would hold a demonstration outside the Rashtrapathi Bhavan on April 24 demanding presidential assent to the Act. If the President did not give his assent, he would file a public interest litigation.
