Karnataka is interested in setting up a Rs 3,590 crore petrochemical complex proposed by the Centre.

Four other states "" West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat "" have already submitted their respective proposals to the Centre seeking to implement the project. The project will be awarded to only one state.

The state cabinet discussed the project at its meeting on Thursday. "We will submit our project proposal to the Centre shortly. We have proposed to set up the petrochemical complex in Mangalore," Karnataka's primary and secondary education minister Basavaraja H Horatti told reporters after the meeting.

He said Karnataka had an advantage over rest of the states. "We are already implementing a petrochemical SEZ in Mangalore in association with the ONGC. We will be in a position to turn Mangalore into a petrochemical hub by bagging the new project," he added.

The meeting also approved the construction of a Vidhana Soudha (state secretariat) in Belgaum at a cost of Rs 230 crore.

For the first time in the history of the state, a legislature session was conducted in Belgaum last year.

The government has decided to hold winter session of the legislature in Belgaum every year.

"A sum of Rs 70 crore has already been released for the construction of the Vidhana Soudha in Belgaum," the minister added.
