LS to discuss Bhopal Gas tragedy tomorrow

The Lok Sabha will take up a discussion on the Bhopal Gas tragedy tomorrow with members of several opposition parties including Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj giving a notice for it.

The BJP earlier had plans to raise discussion on the issue under rule 184 which entails voting in order to censure the government on the worst industrial disaster in the world in the wake of the recent court judgement.

A Bhopal court has recently convicted former Union Carbide India chairman Keshub Mahindra and six others and awarded them a maximum of two years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs one lakh each.

Gurudas Dasgupta (CPI), Basudeb Acharia (CPI-M), Gopinath Munde (BJP), Nama Nageswar Rao (TDP) and Subhash Wankhede (Shiv Sena) are among others who have sought the debate under rule 193 which will just be a short duration discussion.

The issue of safe passage to the former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson by the then government after the mishap in 1984 has come under attack from several political parties.

Besides, these parties had alleged that the victims of the gas disaster had received paltry compensation.
