Massive fire breaks out at 'Make in India' event in Mumbai

Sixteen fire engines and six water tankers were rushed to the spot to put out the flames

A massive fire broke out today on stage during a cultural programme at the ongoing 'Make In India Week' event at Girgaum Chowpatty.

The blaze started during the 'Maharashtra Rajni' event when a lavani (dance) performance was underway. Sixteen fire engines and six water tankers were rushed to the spot and are trying to put out flames. The cause of the fire was being ascertained and further details are awaited.

Maharashtra Governor CV Rao, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his wife Amruta Fadnavis, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and his wife Rashmi Thackeray, actors Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, ministers, parliamentarians, legislators, and other prominent personalities watching the performance were shifted to safer places.

The BMC said the fire could have been caused by an electric short- circuit.

Maharashtra Chief Minister tweeted later: "Very unfortunate occurrence of fire in cultural program organised by GoM at Mumbai. No casualties reported,  no one is injured."

Actors Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan were also watching the programme when the fire broke out. They were immediately rescued.

In a statement, the chief minister said four fire tenders were avaiable at the event, which helped in controlling the fire immediately.
