The examinations will be held by British Council Kolkata at the Calcutta Medical Reseach Institute (CMRI) on February 27-28, and March 2-3.
Kolkata thus becomes only the third overseas venue after Cairo and Colombo to hold the Part III examinations, which involve orals and clinicals, of the RCS, England.
Since January 2005, the city had been a venue for the Part I and II exams of the college.
According to Dr Sumit Choudhury, local coordinator of the MRCS exam, Kolkata, "The visiting team from the RCS, England were very impressed with CMRI's infrastructure, quality consciousness, international tie-ups and central location."
The large number of candidates from eastern India who take the exams as well as the city's strategic proximity to southeast Asia, especially Nepal which has traditionally been a centre for the FRCS, may also have led to the selection of Kolkata.
RCS England had also fixed on a special rates for the examinees at Kolkata -- Rs 15,000 or £145 each for Parts I and II and Rs 45,000 or £520 for Part III, payable paid in pounds or rupees, informed Suchitra Mukherjee, head, examination services, east India, BritishCouncil.
The fees in Britain were £190 for the first two and around £550 for the third. Already, around 55 candidates have registered for the exam from India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Nepal, Bhutan, west Asia and even from London.
A team of 14 examiners -- administrators, paramedics and doctors -- will be in the city to conduct the exam.
"However, local examiners will be on call," says Choudhury, "and may well be used later."
The results of the exam will be known at the end of each day. While Kolkata is RCS, England's first centre in India, the other RCSs at Glasgow and Edinburgh already opened centres in India, in New Delhi, Chennai and lately, Coimbatore, where the MRCS Part I and II examinations were held.
RCS, Glasgow also conducted the Part III exams for the first time in the national capital in September last year.
