The government intends to open more Kendriya Vidyalayas in the country but does not have the funds to do so, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said in Lok Sabha today.
Pointing out that his ministry was allocated Rs 1500 crore last year, he said "all this money is spent in running the existing 981 Kendriya Vidyalayas. We cannot open new Kendriya Vidyalayas till more funds are provided."
Responding to supplementaries during Question Hour, Sibal said his demand was for Rs 4,600 crore.
Praising the performance of KV students, Sibal added "I would want that there is a Kendriya Vidyalaya in every district. 275 districts have no KV."
The Minister said 50 KVs would be established in "focussed areas".
He elaborated that the concept of "neighbourhood schools" in slums would be implemented in three years.
"Once the Right to Education Bill is passed, model schools for those between 6 to 14 years of age would be established," Sibal added.
