State-run power utility NTPC today said it would increase the power generation capacity of its gas-based plant at Kayamkulam in Kerala to 2,300 Mw from the current 350 Mw in the next three years.
The company is in talks with Petronet LNG for sourcing 2.1 million tonnes of gas for this power plant.
"The generation capacity of Kayamkulam would be raised by 1,950 Mw in the next three years," NTPC CMD R S Sharma said here.
When asked about securing gas for the power plant, Sharma said, "Talks are on with Petronet LNG for sourcing gas...We want 2.1 million tonnes and they are offering 1.2 million tonnes....Lets see."
NTPC has seven gas-based power stations in the country totalling a capacity of 4,000 Mw.
The company recently floated a global tender to source 2.5 mmscmd (million standard cubic metres per day) of Regasified Liquified Natural Gas (R-LNG) for firing its gas-based power stations.
The company requires 15-16 mmscmd of gas per day for its gas-based power plants.
