The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Maharashtra government on a petition seeking protection to life and property of all the citizens in the wake of recent attacks against the north Indians allegedly by Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists.
The bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan sought a reply from the government on petitioner’s allegation that it had failed to take effective steps to check the violence.
The petition was filed by a Delhi-based trader Salek Chand Jain, who complained that the attacks on north Indians had led to a chain reaction in other parts of the country and it could destroy the nation's unity and integrity.
