In order to give a push to the tourism sector in the state, the Punjab government signed an MoU with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) to formulate a tourism development master plan for the state. | |
| The proposed master plan is likely to take shape in seven months and will focus on heritage, culture, natural and medical tourism. |

| The project, which will result in a 15-year tourism development master plan for the period 2008-2023, will define tourism policy and strategy, identify tourism products and services and develop them in a sustainable manner. |

| "The project will also provide detailed short-term recommendations in respect of the tourism planning, education and training, marketing and promotion, environmental preservation and cultural conservation aspects related to tourism,"said the director of UNWTO Development Assistance Department, H Varma. |
