The Indian rupee depreciated by 14 paise against the dollar in the early trade today, as the greenback gained against major Asian currencies.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic unit fell by 14 paise to Rs 44.49/ a dollar following the appreciation of US dollar against the euro and other Asian currencies.

The rupee had ended 23 paise higher at Rs 44.35/36 a dollar in the previous session.

Forex dealers said weaker Asian currencies against the American dollar coupled with demand for dollars from importers, weighed down the rupee sentiment.

Besides, subdued opening of the stock markets today also put pressure on the rupee's sentiment, they said.

The Bombay Stock Exchange index Sensex fell by 54.92 points or 0.27 per cent to 20,248.20 points in the opening trade today.
