The Supreme Court today issued notices to the central government and the Andhra Pradesh government on a petition moved by the Karnataka government seeking an order to stop the Andhra government from going ahead with the Telugu Ganga and Srisailam projects utilising the surplus water of the Krishna river.
The court had passed a detailed judgment on the Krishna river water last year. However, Solicitor General Harish Salve told the bench consisting of Justice GB Pattanaik and Justice Ruma Pal that none of the states had approached the Centre for constituting a new river water tribunal.
Karnataka expressed its apprehension that once Andhra Pradesh went ahead with those large irrigation projects using the surplus water from the river, it might lay claim to the additional quantity of water as a matter of right.
