The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has addressed a letter dated 5th June to income tax officers expressing concern that the rectification or grievance applications filed by the taxpayers are not being dealt with promptly.

"It is pointed out that the Citizen's Charter of the Department requires that applications for rectification are to be disposed of within two months from the end of the month in which application is received," said CBDT in the letter.

The department has directed that all rectification applications that were received up to 31st March 2015 should be disposed of on or before 20th June 2015.

"The Income-tax Department is committed to promptly redress taxpayer grievances and all the officers of the department are expected to take lead in fulfilling this commitment," said CBDT to income tax officers.

Sunil Shah, Partner, Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP stated that it is in spirit of the department's commitment to provide a fair tax regime.

"The Assessing Officers have also been advised to promptly settle the grievances related to verification of demand. This initiative will go a long way in resolving several issues which are routine but numerous. This will not only serve to liquidate several demands raised through clerical errors but will also help taxpayers to realise funds which are locked up in tax refunds," said Shah.
