Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Sushil Kumar Shinde yesterday lambasted the BJP for taking an undue and unwarranted interest in Sonia Gandhi enrolling as a primary member of the Congress. The BJP is afraid of Congress becoming very strong, but its leaders should observe political morality instead of interfering in our family business as we dont tell them if they should choose Vajpayee or Advani as their leader, Shinde said.

The BJP national general secretary and party MP, Pramod Mahajan, had remarked here last week that if attempts were made to foist Sonia Gandhi as the Congress leader, then there could be a vertical split in the party.

The former AICC general secretary reiterated that Sonia Gandhi was the only hope for reuniting all Congressmen as she has the charisma to touch the pulse of grassroots level congress workers all over the country and bring together lots of groups which have cropped up in the party. Shinde expressed the view that people were emotional about Sonia Gandhi because she is the wife of Rajiv Gandhi, whose memories they cherished. To avoid groups in the Congress and to weld various groups together, Sonia will play a crucial role, he felt Congress workers nation-wide had welcomed Sonia as they had love for members of the Nehru and Gandhi family., he added.
