The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, the government's ambitious financial-inclusion scheme, launched on August 28, has already seen 47.6 million accounts being opened - about 64 per cent of the target for January 26 next year. Bank officials say they will be able to achieve the 75 million target well before time. Though the issuance of RuPay debit cards under the scheme has been relatively slow, bank executives say the backlog will be cleared within the next few weeks.
