"The resolution is a groundless accusation and is not only against the Olympic spirit but also against the wishes of the people and athletes all around the world, including the US," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said.

The taking exception to a proposed resolution in the American House of Representatives that flayed Beijing on human rights resolution which cited the "Olympic traditions of freedom and openness" and criticized China on human rights.

China had made a "stern representation" to the US, official Xinhua news agency quoted Liu as saying.

"We suggest that some US lawmakers immediately stop their wrong words and deeds aimed at disrupting the Beijing Olympic Games by using the human rights issue so as to avoid harming the healthy and stable development of China-US relations," Liu said.

The resolution proposed by the Democratic head of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Howard Berman, urged Beijing to "immediately end abuses of the human rights of its citizens, to cease repression of Tibetan and Uighur citizens and to end its support for the governments of Sudan and Myanmar."

It said this was required to ensure that the Beijing Olympics "take place in an atmosphere that honours the Olympic traditions of freedom and openness."
