Swaraj, US envoy discuss WikiLeaks

US ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer today met the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and asked her to feel free to call him if her party found anything of concern in the WikiLeaks revelations.

Roemer met Swaraj in Parliament for an hour in what is being described as a pre-scheduled meeting during which the on-going WikiLeaks controversy, that has caused a major diplomatic embarrasment to the Barack Obama-led US administration, was mentioned by the ambassador.

"Roemer told me that the person behind the WikiLeaks has already been arrested. There may be more than 250,000 leaks but Roemer said the Indian government has handled the issue very maturely and responsibly," Swaraj said.

As part of its massive leak of a quarter million classified documents of the US government, whistle-blower website WikiLeaks, released a "secret" cable issued by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton where she has described India as a "self-appointed front-runner" for a permanent UNSC seat.

The senior BJP leader told Roemer that the Niira Radia tapes had created a similar controversy in India of late.

"I said that it seems an era and atmosphere of mistrust has come," she told reporters after the meeting.

Roemer assured her that in case further revelations made through WikiLeaks are a matter of concern for her party, she can get in touch with him.

"He said that if something comes out through Wikileaks which causes concern, then we can talk it over. Please feel free to call me," Swaraj said quoting Roemer.

During the meeting, several issues raised by Swaraj in her one-to-one interaction with Obama on his recent visit to India came up for discussion.

Swaraj maintained that today's meeting with Roemer was fixed around the time when former US President Al Gore was in Delhi recently and was not held to specifically discuss the WikiLeaks issue.
