Tuberculosis (TB) cases in Nashik district, especially in rural areas, have come down and the disease is under control after Central government launched a revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme in 2001.
 
"We have adequate funds as the programme is being assisted by the World Bank and we have good facility at Civil Hospital premises to treat serious TB patients including Out-patient ward, modern laboratory, MMR unit, x-ray examination," said Dr Prakash Aher, District TB officer and member secretary of District TB Control Society.
 
"We have undertaken a drive for health education by District TB Control Society," he said.
 
Nashik district has been divided into nine divisions in rural and tribal areas-- Ghoti, Harsool, Kalwan, Vani, Nashik, Niphad, Manmad, Satana and Malegaon "" with a population of three to five lakh and the medical officer was entrusted the responsibility of controlling the disease in these areas, Aher added.
 
Every TB paitient is given a dose of medicine by the health staff at the centres, and proper guidance regarding intake of medicines, and how to take care of the patient is given to the families, he said.
 
"If the patient migrates to another place, we inform the nearest centre to continue his treatment," he added.
 
"To fulfill our target regarding TB, we are taking help of 7 social organisations, 123 private doctors, medical colleges, TB sanitorims, gram-panchayat, anganwadi sevaks, besides organising exhibitions at various places to make people aware of it," he added.
