The Tamil Nadu government is planning to upgrade its primary healthcare centres (PHCs) through public private partnership. It has already initiated the process by roping in three private players. The state currently has over 1,500 PHCs.

Speaking to reporters after signing an agreement with GE Health Care to upgrade a PHC at Banavaram in Vellore district, MRK Pannerselvam, minister for health and family welfare, asked the private companies to join hands with the government to upgrade these centres, which were the only source for the rural population. “They should look at it as corporate social responsibility,” he said.
