Two workers were injured in police firing today at Mundra Power Plant in Kutch district following violent protests after the death of a labourer last night, police said.

Two policemen were also injured in the stone pelting by an angry mob of over 2,000 workers, they said adding, that nearly 7-8 vehicle were gutted in fire by the agitated workers.

According to senior police inspector of Mundra police station J D Vaghela, the workers of the Adani groups' Kundra power plant went berserk after the contractor for whom the deceased man worked refused to pay compensation. The labourer died after falling off a chimney.

"There were violent protest by the workers of the plant following the death of a man yesterday. We had controlled the situation last night. The workers were agitated after the labour contractor refused to pay compensation," Vaghela told PTI.

"Protest continued this morning. Police fired 12 rounds to disburse the crowd which was getting out of control," he said, adding the situation was now under control as talks between workers and the management was on.

“The labourer who met with an accident was engaged by a contractor. Police resorted to force to control the mob and normalcy has been restored. The work at power plant is progressing as per schedule,” said an official spokesperson at Adani group.
