Uttaranchal power situation improves

"We have started getting 1.5 million units of power from Ramganga today," said S P S Raghav, the chairman and managing director of the Uttaranchal Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL).
The Ramganga project was shut down for some time.
Earlier, due to the non-melting of snow in the hills, the water level in various rivers was going down, which in turn lowered power production in the state while power houses having a capacity of 5,000 Mw have been shut down due to various reasons in the northern region.
Due to these reasons, UPCL said there was shortage of power in the entire northern region including Uttaranchal. Apart from this, Uttaranchal's share of power in the central pool has also decreased.
It said Uttaranchal is overdrawing nearly 2.50 million units at higher rates since April 7. In this regard, the UPCL warned that emergency power cut was inevitable in the state.
UPCL appealed to the people in the state not to misuse power in the state and asked them to use air-conditions, welding machines, decorative lights sparingly. Farmers are being advised not to use tube-wells during peak hours.
Uttaranchal's power blues compounded as the power scenario worsened in the neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, UPCL officials claimed. On the other hand, due to the arrival of big industries as well as the increasing demand also created unwanted situation before the UPCL. Currently, Uttaranchal needs 15.5 million units of power daily whereas the power production in the state stands only at 5 million units.
To meet the gap, Uttaranchal is taking 6.5 million units of power from the central pool. Besides 2 million units are being overdrawn. Apart from this, Uttaranchal is also taking back one million unit which it had banked in Punjab and Haryana. But all this has left with a deficiency of 2 to 3 million units of power which is forcing the UPCL to go for power cuts in some parts of the state.
