The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday imposed the stringent National Security Act (NSA) on Varun Gandhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Pilibhit for the coming Lok Sabha elections. The NSA has been imposed on the recommendation of the Pilibhit district magistrate, who has found Gandhi instigating hatred against a particular community.
The 29-year-old BJP leader has also been charged with attempt to murder, rioting and other offences in an FIR filed in connection with his recent speech at an election rally in Pilibhit in the state.
Additional Cabinet Secretary Vijay Shankar Pandey, at a hurriedly called press conference on Sunday, stated that Gandhi had spoken against a community in his public address at Dalgangj and Barhkhera localities in Pilibhit. Besides, while coming to surrender in the district court, Gandhi did not follow the route he had communicated to the officials. He has also been charged with instigating his supporters to attack police and break Section 144.
