Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said that attacks on the basis of corruption and honesty are not personal, but added that in politics, personal attacks should be avoided.

"I completely agree that there should not be any personal attacks. When issues of corruption and honesty are raised in the public domain, then, it is not a personal attack, but it is a political issue. Issues of probity in politics are public issues," said Jaitley.

Jaitley was responding to the statement of Congress President Sonia Gandhi's daughter Priyanka Gandhi, who said her husband Robert Vadra was being attacked by the BJP to divert the attention of people from development issues to "meaningless talk", and that the "truth" about her husband will prevail.

Jaitley further said, "It was the Congress supporters who led a personal attack on Modi by making an issue out of his marriage or, giving security to a woman in Ahmedabad. I am happy that in the Congress Party, there is somebody who is saying that we should refrain from personal attacks."

He also appealed to the Congress leaders to consider Priyanka's statement about personal attacks before making any jibes on Modi.
