Nilekani promises 24/7 helpline to reach out to people
Congress candidate from Bangalore South constituency Nandan Nilekani has already opened a website to reach out to people
BS Reporter Bangalore Nandan Nilekani, Congress candidate from Bangalore South constituency for the April 17 Lok Sabha polls, today dared his opponent from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and sitting MP, HN Ananth Kumar, to explain how he would make himself accessible to the voters in the constituency and its improvement.
According to Nilekani, the sitting MP has been an "absentee MP", who was hardly visible in the constituency in his last five terms.
"Despite being a low performer in Parliament, ranking 139th, he has not told citizens how he would improve or be more accessible in the next five years," Nandan said. "He (Kumar) is making the same old promises he made five years ago," he said during his election campaign at Bangalore University recently.
The former chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) unveiled his vision plan for the Bangalore South constituency. He talked about his plan to make it easy for people to reach out to their MP, once he is elected. He has promised to be available to voters through a helpline.
"My promise is that I will start a 24/7 helpline, which will guarantee a first response to the caller within 48 hours," Nilekani said adding, "I will have regular citizen meetings, where there is a public review and discussion on the city's performance. I believe transparency and easy access gives citizens a lot of power."
Instead of making any real commitments, Kumar was hiding behind national leaders, he said.
"One of the things I hear constantly from voters across Bangalore South is that Ananth Kumar is the "absentee MP". He comes to the constituency only when elections are happening. I will change that and be accessible to anyone who wants to contact me, so that people's concerns are not ignored like they are today," Nilekani added.
Nilekani has already opened a website to reach out to people, and responds to those who enroll their names in his website.
Speaking at an interaction with factory workers in Bommanahalli on Wednesday, he had announced creation of a citizen platform to ensure that promises made are delivered. "I met factory workers who were mostly women in Bommanahalli and I spoke about one of my core manifesto promises - the Mitras network. I have committed to creating a platform, which every Bangalore citizen can join.
