Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi today said youths of Odisha will be provided with jobs and poor people free medicines, if they vote out ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government and bring back his party to power.

"This is the time for change. Give the present government in Odisha a break and bring back Congress to power to witness real development," Gandhi said at a public meeting at Nabakrushna Choudhury Stadium in Jagatsinghpur district.

As Indian markets are flooded with China-made products, steps must be taken to promote manufacturing sector in the country, the Congress leader said.

"Don't you want to see products having stickers like 'Made in Odisha' and 'Made in India'. The UPA government has plans to set up manufacturing corridors through which lakhs of people can be provided jobs," he said.

Congress has plans to turn India into a manufacturing hub like China with manufacturing corridors extending from Delhi to Mumbai and to Bengaluru while the nation's youth will play key roles in building products with domestic brand, thus ensuring jobs for youth of Odisha and other states, he added.

This is the second visit of the Gandhi scion within two weeks to Odisha and third since the start of this year. During the meeting, he sought votes for Chiranjeeb Biswal, Congress candidate for Jagatsinghpur assembly seat , who is also the brother of IPL Commissioner and Rajya Sabha MP, Ranjeeb Biswal.

Unlike his previous speeches that reflected welfare measures and rights for tribal population, Gandhi today focused on development agenda to woo the voters of coastal region of the state. Eastern Odisha, with 11 Lok Sabha and 77 assembly constituencies, will go to polls on April 17. Contrast to western and southern part of the state, coastal region is densely populated with more educated mass and business communities. The region is also touted as bastion of ruling BJD.

Though Congress supports development through industrialisation, its aim is to provide the benefits of progress to common man, unlike BJD, Gandhi said.

"This election is a fight between two ideologies. While the Congress is for industries and development with its benefits reaching the common man and the poor, the BJD stands for the profits earned through industries going to a select few," he said.

While exhorting the people to vote for the Congress, Gandhi said, if voted to power, the party would ensure free medicines and healthcare for the poor and pucca houses for all by enacting laws in Parliament. Rahul also assured that special welfare measures would be launched for the 70 crore people of India belonging to the lower middle class. This scheme, which would be implemented if Congress comes to power at the Centre, would be applicable for the categories which is above the poverty line and below the middle class such as people like electricians, carpenters, workers, farmers, etc, he said.
