Deepak Ishwarbhai Amin, the Congress leader who was also a director on the board of State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, has resigned from the bank's board. The central board of SBI accepted his resignation at its meeting held on May 23, the lender said in a communication to the stock exchanges. Amin was appointed by the government on the SBI board in January 2012.

In SBI, Amin was a member of the risk management committee, special committee for monitoring of large value frauds and also a member of the IT Strategy Committee.

Ahead of the general elections in January, Amin — an alumni of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Bombay) who also worked in Microsoft for many years — was selected by Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi as the party's media panelist.

The Congress faced its worst-ever defeat in the general elections, winning in only 44 seats.
