According to the CNN/ORC International Survey, Obama's approval rating on foreign policy has hit an all-time low with only three in ten approving of how he is handling Syria.
Even as the number of Americans who approve of how Obama is handling his job in general remains steady, only four in ten approve of the job Obama is doing on foreign policy, with 57 per cent of them giving the president a thumbs down.
The 40% approval rating on foreign policy is Obama's lowest level ever on that issue in CNN polling.
A Wall Street Journal/NBC poll showed that people are increasingly wary of overseas entanglements and doubtful that an attack would benefit the US.
Only 33 per cent of those polled said Congress should approve President's request to attack Syria, while less than a quarter thinks military action is in the national interest.
Both the polls were released on Monday.
According to the Wall Street Journal/NBC poll almost six in ten Americans expressed disapproval of how Obama has dealt with the Syria situation and just a third saying he had made a convincing case for action against Damascus.
Should Congress turn down the president's request to authorise force, 59% said they would oppose Obama moving ahead on his own to deploy strikes against Syria, the journal reported.
