Ukrainian minister puts war damage to infrastructure at about $10 bn

Ukraine has suffered about $10 billion in damage to infrastructure since Russia invaded the country, Infrastructure Minister Oleksander Kubrakov said on Monday.

He said in televised comments that the figure stood as of Sunday, and added: "The majority of (damaged) structures will be repaired in a year, and the most difficult ones – in two years." Kubrakov said 40,000 people had been evacuated from the eastern city of Kharkiv on Sunday. But Ukraine has appealed to Russia to let civilians leave other cities and an Interior ministry official, Vadym Denysenko, said 4,000 civilians still needed to be evacuated from the outskirts of the capital Kyiv.

"Russia is doing all it can to prevent (humanitarian) corridors," Denysenko added.

United suspends some India flights after Russia overflight ban

United Airlines said Monday it has indefinitely suspended two flights to India after it halted flights over Russia last week.

The Chicago-based airline said last week it had stopped service between San Francisco and Delhi and between Newark and Mumbai. The airline said it still plans to fly to Delhi from both Chicago and Newark. The Biden administration last week joined the European Union and Canada in banning Russian airlines from U.S. airspace.

Britain sets out 'dirty money' crackdown, wants to hobble Russia's Putin

Britain set out ways it would crack down on "dirty money" on Monday, introducing new legislation to "hobble" Russian President Vladimir Putin by making it more difficult for those close to him to use London as their playground.

The much-delayed Economic Crime Bill comes as lawmakers from across the political spectrum call on the government to do more to stop the flow of Russian cash into London, dubbed by some as "Londongrad", in response to Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

But while anti-corruption campaigners said some of the measures to try to force property owners to reveal their identities and strengthen unexplained wealth orders, they said without new funding, law enforcement agencies would struggle.

The new law shows the government is "determined to root out the dirty money in our economy, and importantly, to hobble Putin and his cronies," interior minister Priti Patel told parliament.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu says the foreign ministers of Russia and Ukraine will meet near the Turkish Mediterranean coastal city of Antalya this week.

 

Cavusoglu said Monday he would also take part in the meeting between Russia's Sergey Lavrov and Dmytro Kuleba of Ukraine, which would be in a “trilateral format.” The meeting will take place on the sidelines of an international diplomacy forum in Antalya this week.

 

Turkey, which has close ties to both Russia and Ukraine has sought to place itself as a mediator between the warring sides.

Russia-Ukraine war pushes up global gold prices to $2000 per ounce

Inflationary fears triggered a rush for safe haven investments during the ongoing market volatility that pushed up the global gold price to $2,000 per ounce on Monday.

NATO countries are not ready to discuss having Ukraine in the organisation and Kiev is now ready to discuss "some non-NATO models", an official said.

"The response that we are getting from the NATO countries is that they are not ready to even discuss having us in NATO, not for the closest period of five or 10 years. We would not fight for the NATO applications, we would fight for the result, but not for the process," Xinhua news agency quoted David Arakhamia, member of the Ukrainian delegation for talks with Russia, as saying to Fox News on Sunday.

"We are ready to discuss some non-NATO models... We are open to discuss such things in a broader circle, not only in bilateral discussions with Russia, but also with other partners," Arakhamia added.

Netflix suspends services in Russia amid nation's invasion of Ukraine

Streaming giant Netflix is suspending its operations in Russia, joining the long line of major entertainment companies and Hollywood studios that have closed operations in the country.

 

"Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia," a Netflix spokesperson said as quoted by Variety on Sunday.

 

Back in December, Russia's Roskomnadzor included Netflix in the register of audiovisual services after the subscriber base for the company exceeded 100,000.
