It is no secret that most gym-goers — particularly those focused on weight training — pay little attention to their footwear. That is perhaps why I’m hardly surprised when I see a few regulars at my gym working out in canvas shoes. Wearing canvas shoes to the gym is almost as bad as donning combat boots for work —a sartorial faux-pas and a royal misfit.
Most people don’t realise what a difference a good pair of training shoes can make. Shoes, after all, offer the strength, stability and flexibility that you need during exercise. They prevent injuries and improve performance. Specialised “training” shoes may seem less than essential, but it’s amazing how much more you can do with your workout if you have a decent pair. Which is why the new Reebok Speed TR Flexweave won me over instantly.
In some ways, the Speed TR Flexweave is the successor to the Fast Flexweave, a gym shoe that Reebok launched earlier this year. And it’s safe to say that this is a terrific upgrade. I loved the tennis shoe-like traction pattern on the outsole; it provides the balance and grip that are necessary while training on different types of surfaces. The most discernible change is a new low-cut design that promises to enhance ease of movement.
The Speed TR Flexweave performed solidly on all fronts. I tried them out on the treadmill and the results surprised me; thanks to its light weight and cushioning, running on the treadmill never seemed easier. However, given the flattish sole, I wouldn’t recommend this pair for distances over five kilometres.
As for the rest — squats, push-ups, lifting weights, jumping rope, and a host of other high-intensity functional exercises — the shoe gave me almost no reason to complain. Another standout aspect is the mesh-like outer design, which ensures greater breathability — an important feature if you spend much
time in the gym. This is also a seriously sturdy shoe; you can perform burpees non-stop and your toes will not curse you afterward.
The only minor issue with the Speed TR Flexweave is its price. Although not the most expensive, some might think twice before dishing out Rs 8,100 for a training shoe. Having said that, this is among the best pairs I’ve tried, pure running shoes included. Reebok has pulled off a superb all-round shoe that other brands will find hard to match.
