The two-day international conference on humanitarian logistics organized by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Raipur concluded with focus on the role of logistics in disaster response and preparedness, relief distribution and health care systems and food security.
It is the first conference on the subject in India that concluded Tuesday evening. Former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar was the chief guest on the second day of the conference.
Speaking on how technology could be put to use in the disaster management, Kakodkar said there was a need to give back to nature. A technology which could act as a pre-cursor to disasters was equally important, he said. Kakodkar praised the efforts that led to the progress in the last 5 to 6 years while emphasising on how India still has miles to go in terms of Disaster Management.
Earlier in the day three parallel technical sessions on Humanitarian Logistics Modelling; Technology and Humanitarian Logistics; and Agile and Lean Humanitarian Supply Chains were held. The first panel discussion on Strategic Issues in Humanitarian Logistics, which was chaired by Vice Chairman of Bihar State Disaster Management Authority Anil Kumar Sinha, Director General of Indian Coast Guard Anurag G. Thapliyal stressed on key element being speed. The crux of the matter lies in delivering the right thing in the right place at the right time, he said.
IIM-Raipur felicitated and acknowledged the disaster management heroes under four categories: (1) Early Warning and Dissemination (2) Disaster Preparedness (3) Search, Rescue and Evacuation and (4) Post-Disaster Relief Operations, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction. The ICHL 2013 awards for humanitarian work were conferred on Indian Meteorological Department, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Systems, Hyderabad, Odisha State Disaster Management Authority, Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority, National Disaster Response Force, Indian Air Force, Indo Tibetan Border Police, Indian Army and Bhartiya Jan Sangthan, Pune.
The International Conference on Humanitarian Logistics witnessed several eminent dignitaries and paper presenters discussing the methods to be adopted to tackle disaster management.
“The primary aim of ICHL 2013 was to increase the awareness of critical issues in humanitarian logistics and provide a platform for deliberations, experience sharing and cross–fertilisation of ideas, case studies and best practices” said B.S. Sahay, Conference Co-Chair and Director, IIM Raipur.
