Asian markets mostly subdued; Shanghai soars

 While Japan's Nikkei plunged 114 points to 17,647, Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 76 points to 20,560.

The Taiwan Weighted and the Straits Times indices were down four points each at 8366 and 3557, respectively. The Seoul Composite index slipped nine points to 1720.
