The Bureau of Indian Standards is extending its certification to the sugar industry. The organisation is also harmonising its standards for sugar with the Codex standards.

According to an official, Bureau of Indian Standards certification would give the sugar industry an advantage in the international market.

The official said the Bureau of Indian Standards was in the process of revising its sugar standards to align them with the revised Codex standards and its testing methods with that of the International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis (Icumsa). The bureau is also developing provisions for consumer packs for plantation white sugar packing.
