Losses in a volatile week

Last week, the Smart Portfolios benchmark, the BSE 200 index was flat at 1,845. Despite this, gains made earlier meant that the portfolio value of a Rs 10 lakh investment in the BSE 200 index on September 1, 2008, appreciated 3.55 per cent to Rs 10.35 lakh at the end of last week.

With the exception of Kashyap Pujara, fund managers rushed to book profits. Of the 64 trades last week, 39 were on the sell side while 25 were on the buy side.

Anand Agarwal led the returns chart for the second consecutive week with a 46.7 per cent surge in his net worth. Amar Ambani's net worth zoomed 39.3 per cent to Rs 13.93 lakh, while Sadanand Shetty's portfolio soared 30.4 per cent to Rs 13.04 lakh. Kashyap Pujara's net worth rose 27.2 per cent to Rs 12.72 lakh. THE WINNING HABIT
ANAND AGARWAL
Fund Manager, Reliance Money

Anand Agarwal's portfolio value declined around 1.3 per cent from Rs 14.88 lakh to Rs 14.68 lakh but he is still the leader on the returns score. He was the second biggest seller among the fund managers and sold scrips worth Rs 2.23 lakh.

Last week, he executed 18 trades, of which 10 were on the sell side and rest were on the buy side. He exited from Jai Corporation, in which he made consolidated gains of 11.5 per cent. The other stocks, he exited were Genus Power Infra with a gains of 26.3 per cent while on Glenmark Pharma he booked a loss of 4.8 per cent. He made handsome profits in TRF and Bharati Shipyard. Jet Airways, Gujarat NRE Coke, Chennai Petro and Pantaloon are the major losers in his portfolio. He holds Rs 4.83 lakh in cash.

Sadanand Shetty, who executed just five trades last week, was in the sell mode with net sales of Rs 0.62 lakh. His net worth is down by 2.76 per cent to Rs 13.04 lakh as against Rs 13.41 lakh in the preceding week. Shetty exited from Bank of India with 21 per cent gains and booked partial profits in scrips like Orbit Corporation (128.69 per cent), DLF (30.14 per cent) and HDFC (7.13 per cent).

He made fresh investments in McLeod Russell at the beginning of last week and this is now up 8.3 per cent. Other stocks in his portfolio include Godrej Consumer, Larsen & Toubro, Shriram Transport and Reliance Capital. Shetty holds cash worth Rs 3 lakh.

THE CONTRARIAN
KASHYAP PUJARA

Kashyap Pujara was the only net buyer among the fund managers. He bought shares worth Rs 2.15 lakh, and sold stocks worth Rs 0.51 lakh. However, his net worth has seen a decline of 5.8 per cent to 12.72 lakh vs Rs 13.51 lakh in the preceding week.

Partial profit-taking in Oriental Bank of Commerce fetched him a returns of 7.4 per cent. He exited from Sterlite Industries with a 28.4 per cent gain. He added Solar Explosives and IBN18 Broadcast to his portfolio. His investments stand at Rs 11.66 lakh and he holds Rs 1.06 lakh in cash.
