Market cap of BSE listed firms hits new high

The total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies touched a new high of Rs 137.56 lakh crore on Thursday.

The total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies touched a new high of Rs 137.56 lakh crore on Thursday, after a strong gain in heavyweight stocks like Reliance Industries (RIL) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

Investor wealth of BSE-listed firms, measured by market capitalisation (m-cap), had seen a previous record high of Rs 136.88 lakh crore scaled on September 19, 2017, the BSE data shows.

RIL closed record high of Rs 873 on the BSE ahead of its July-September quarter (Q2FY18) results tomorrow. The company’s m-cap gained by Rs 20,328 crore  to Rs 5.52 lakh today. TCS is scheduled to declare its Q2FY18 results today, has seen m-cap gain of Rs 9,195 crore in single day.

The two recently listed insurance companies SBI Life Insurance Company and ICICI Lombard General Insurance added Rs 1-lakh crore in total m-cap, also led the BSE m-cap to hit new high.

In absolute terms, another seven stocks – Coal India, Avenue Supermarts (D-Mart), Adani Transmission, Bharti Infratel, NTPC, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) have contributed more than Rs 5,000 crore each in m-cap increase since September 19, 2017.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex ended 1% higher at 32,182 today, is less than 2% away from its all-time high level of 32,686 touched on August 2, in intra-day deal.
