The capitalisation of the breadth was positive too as the commensurate figures were Rs 11,866 crs : Rs 8,197 crs. The F&O figures indicated a sustained short covering on expiry day, which led to a steep rally in the final hour of trade.

The markets have closed at the upper end of the intraday band as the bears covered at lower levels
