Import of refined bleached and deodorised (RBD) palmolein jumped by roughly 294 per cent between July and September, 2004, according to data released by the Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA).

SEA attributed the rise to ongoing controversy over carotenoid content in crude palm oil. RBD palmolein imports escalated from barely 33,000 tonne in July to 79,000 tonne in August and clocked a month-on-month rise of over 64 per cent in September, to 130,000 tonne.

Import of edible oil in September was 587,885 tonne compared with 480,150 tonne in the same period last year, a rise of 22 per cent.

However, overall import of edible oils declined by 17 per cent between November 2003 and September 2004, (Nov'03-Sep'04) or the first 11 months of the Indian oil year. Actual import was 38,83,298 tonne.

Import of refined oil in Nov'03-Sep'04 rose to 698,629 tonne, or 18 per cent of total edible oil imports. Refined oil import was 242,760 tonne or 5 per cent of total imports in the corresponding period of the last oil year. Import of crude oil declined to 3,184,669 tonne. Last year's import was 4,484,983 tonne.

Palm oil products imported in the 11 months was 3,082,078 tonne, or 79 per cent of total import, whereas soft oils import was 801,220 tonne. Palm oil share rose to 79 per cent from 73 per cent.

Non-edible oil imports in September declined by 76.5 per cent from the same period last year, bringing down the volume of imports in the last eleven months. Crude palm stearin and palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) were the major non-edible oil imports.
