The country's natural rubber exports dropped by 67 per cent during April - September. Total exports during the period stood at 16,215 tonnes against 47,721 tonnes in the same period in last year.

The exports target of 70,000 tonnes set by the Rubber Board for the whole year is also looking unachievable due to a bunch of reasons.

Market experts predict that there might be an additional exports of 5000-6000 tonnes in the remaining months of the current financial year.

The non-availability of exportable surplus and the narrow gap between domestic and overseas prices will be the key factors for the negative exports growth.

The on-going rupee appreciation has also hindered the prospect of exports badly. Increase in domestic consumption has also resulted in a drop in overseas shipments. Domestic demand for rubber in April -September stood at 416,800 tonnes, up 3.2 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Production registered a drop of 16 per cent during the period.
