Sensex breaks 10K, down 555pts; NTPC slumps 10%

The Sensex today broke the 10,000-mark in late trades - a level last seen in July 2006. The index is now down 555 points at 10,026.

Reliance Infrastructure and Jaiprakash Associates have slumped 10% each to Rs 501 and Rs 67, respectively. NTPC has plunged 9.7% to Rs 150.

Reliance Communications has tumbled over 9% to Rs 235. DLF has shed 8.5% at Rs 297.

Sterlite and TCS have plunged nearly 8% each to Rs 275 and Rs 456, respectively.

BHEL and Bharti Airtel have slipped 7.7% each to Rs 1,211 and Rs 675, respectively.

Wipro has declined 7.5% to Rs 257. Tata Steel is down 7% at Rs 251.

All index stocks are in negative zone.

Out of 2,601 stocks traded so far, 1,765 have declined, 767 have advanced and the rest are unchanged.
