A new study has shown that one in ten people lie to their partners about their earnings.

According to a new research by insurer Budget Direct, one in three people admitted to checking their partner's credit card statements, with nearly 40 percent of women admitting to checking their partner's plastic spending habits compared with 30 percent of men, News.com.au reported.

However, AMP financial planner Dianne Charman has warned couples that being untruthful to a partner about finances breeds distrust, while being open and honest from the beginning about financial matters is the key to a successful relationship both in love and money.

Budget Direct spokeswoman Margueritte Rossi has advised couples to agree on how much both can spend on the outset and avoid hiding purchases from loved ones to have a blissful relationship.
