At least 26 people were killed and over 28 others injured as a suicide bomber, pretending to be a worshipper, blew himself up inside a mosque during the afternoon prayers in northeast Nigeria's city of Maiduguri.

The untoward incident took place a day after newly-elected President Muhammadu Buhari took charge.

The suicide attack at Alhaji Haruna mosque came hours after Boko Haram launched a separate attack on the first full day of the President's term, reported The Express Tribune.

Buhari had in his inaugural address vowed to eliminate the Islamist insurgents, describing them as "mindless" and "godless." He had also announced his plan to reinforce Maiduguri with a new command and control centre to better coordinate the counter-insurgency effort.
