The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) on Sunday fatally shot three Palestinians as they broke through the border fence into Israel from the southern Gaza Strip, in two separate incidents.
"A short while ago, two suspects attempted to infiltrate Israel from the southern Gaza Strip and damage the security fence," a statement from the IDF read on Twitter.
"In response, IDF troops fired towards them. One of the suspects was killed, and the other was injured and transferred to security forces for further questioning," the statement added.
A few moments later, the IDF took to Twitter to intimate about the second such incident as well.
"Two terrorists who infiltrated into Israel hurled explosive devices at IDF soldiers. In response, the soldiers fired towards the terrorists, who were killed. It should be noted that this is the second incident this evening" the army said, moments later on Twitter.
In a third incident, soldiers spotted two Palestinians trying to breach the border. They were arrested and found to have knives and armed, according to the military.
As per the local media reports, the Israeli military has also reported an uptick in attempts to breach and damage the border fence during the 'Great March of Return' protests that have taken place every Friday for the last five weeks along the Gaza-Israel border.
The protests are to culminate on May 15, the anniversary of Israel's founding. Palestinians mark the date as their "nakba," or catastrophe.
