55 percent turnout recorded in second phase of Bihar polls

The second phase of the Bihar polls saw a 55 percent of voter turnout.

"The voter's turnout at Kaimur, Rohtas, Arwal, Jehanabad, Aurangabad and Gaya has been recorded as 57.86percent, 54.66 percent, 53.21percent, 56.40 percent, 52.50 percent and 55.54 percent. In total the polling percentage was 55 percent as compared to that of last year which was 52.03 percent," said Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha.

"Women voters outnumbered men voters by five percent, polling percentage of women voters is 57.5 percent, and polling percentage of men voters is 52.5 percent," he added.

Friday's polls began at 7 a.m.in 32 constituencies in six Maoist-hit districts.

Prime Minister Modi had urged people to exercise their voting rights, through a tweet.

Voting was affected in few districts due to faulty EVM delaying the polling process in Jehanabad and later a cane bomb was found at polling booth no. 144 near Rafiganj constituency in Aurangabad District.

Customary verbal volleys were tossed during the polling, with political leaders predicting poll outcomes in the state exchanging curt and quick rejoinders.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar was leaving Prime Minister Modi in the dust in the elections.

Polling in 11 constituencies ended at 3 p.m , and in 12 others. In the remaining nine constituencies it ended at 5 p.m.

A total of 86, 13,870 electors will decide the fate of 456 candidates, 32 out of whom are women. Voting took place in 9,119 polling stations.
