Initial reports of a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake that hit central Myanmar today suggest that ancient temples at the old city of Bagan have been severely damaged.

The site holds more than 2,000 temples and pagodas, some of them centuries old.

The quake's epicentre was about 25 miles south of Bagan, which is popular with backpackers and foreign tourists.

According to reports, the earthquake was so intense that it was felt in Bangkok city, which is about 620 miles (1,000km) away.

So far, there have been no reports on human casualties from the quake.

Strong tremors of earthquake were also felt in various parts of India.

Earthquakes are relatively common in Myanmar. No major quake has hit the country since 2012.

In April, quake did strike in a nearby region causing minor damage but no casualties were reported.
