In a break from earlier norms, a recent army recruitment camp held in Agartala saw huge a turnout, with large numbers of youth showing interest in joining the armed forces.

Thousands of youths gathered at the Dasarath Dev Stadium in the city to participate in the special recruitment rally of the army, which aims to increase the representation of the state in the army.

"There are a total 550 vacancies, including 400 technical posts. We want maximum selections from the North-East region, because if they get recruited here, they can not only serve their nation but also keep away from drugs and insurgency," an army official, IM Lamba said.

Meantime, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who was also the chief guest at the camp, requested the army to regularly organise such recruitment rallies in Tripura so that the youths of the state get an opportunity to serve their motherland.

"I have come here to join the army so that I can serve my motherland. I think this is a great opportunity that the army has made, with an arrangement for a recruitment rally in the North East region," said Anil Paul, one of the aspirants.

"I want to join Indian Army to earn for my family and serve my motherland," said Surjakanta Debnath, another youth.
